There's me and Vivek (and Sabine taking the snapshot) during a two-week trek in the Himalayan foothills in Nepal. I was only 69 at the time, and I met one 70 year old guy carrying a 50 pound backpack. I could never keep up with him, but I could jump in the air, kick with one foot, then kick over my head with the other while still in the air. Lucky, lucky me! Then my doctors pushed a statin drug on me: 20 mg of simvastatin. The cardiologist I went to for a second opinion told me that statins are the reason Americans now live longer; he said some people thought they should be in the water supply. The second photo shows my right calf after 7 months on the statin. I obviously won’t live longer…though it may feel like it. And obviously, what's happened, including my diminished abilities, affects all those around me. |
